Dear readers, it is a pleasure to present this new section where you can send us questions related to your teeth, gums and overall oral health. We will try to answer in a concise manner, always based on evidence and clinical experience.
April is oral cancer awareness month and we would like to start the section by sharing the importance of getting screened. Oral cancer refers to cancer of the oral cavity (mouth) that can affect your lips, gums, tongue, roof of the mouth and cheeks. It also comprises cancer of the oropharynx that can be found in the throat, tonsils and the base of the tongue.
Unfortunately, the numbers are on the rise. The American Cancer Society most recently estimated about 58,450 new cases and 12,230 deaths in the U.S. in 2024 from oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer.
The goal of screening is to detect cancer or lesions that may lead to oral cancer at an early stage; when they are easiest to remove and most likely to be cured.
We will check your face, neck and lips for lumps or abnormalities and also examine your gums, the lining of your mouth, cheeks, tongue and throat for changes in color, texture or sores that don’t heal.
Nobody is exempt, but factors that can increase your risk include:
• Tobacco use of any kind
• Heavy alcohol use
• Use of paan (betel quid)
• Human papillomavirus (HPV)
• Genetic predisposition, history of oral cancer
• History of significant sun exposure can increase the risk of lip cancer
Finding abnormalities does not necessarily mean you have oral cancer. We will document the findings and may recommend a follow-up visit to see if the abnormal area has changed or cleared up. In some cases, a biopsy can help determine if cancer cells are present, this requires taking a sample of the affected area and sending it for laboratory testing.
At Milano Dental Studio, oral cancer screening is part of your bi-annual dental exam. Remember to bring up any concerns, new or unusual symptoms during your next dental visit.
