If you’re a fan of ricotta cookies, you might want to move to New York. According to a recent survey conducted by Google Trends, these soft and sweet treats are the most popular cookies in the Empire State. Cultural Christmas cookies, including Italian, German, Mexican and Polish varieties, were favorites in states across the country, but the Italian influence seemed to dominate in many of them.
But what about New York’s neighboring states of New Jersey and Connecticut? Do they share the same love for ricotta cookies, or do they have different preferences?

And why are ricotta cookies so popular in New York? One possible explanation is the influence of Italian-American culture, which has a strong presence in the state. Ricotta cookies are traditionally made with fresh ricotta cheese, lemon zest and vanilla, and are often decorated with colorful sprinkles or icing. They are usually served during holidays like Christmas and Easter, but can also be enjoyed year-round as a snack or dessert.
Another reason why ricotta cookies might be more popular in New York is that they are simply delicious. They have a moist and cake-like texture, a subtle cheese flavor and a sweet glaze. They are easy to make at home, and can be customized with different toppings and flavors. Some people like to add chocolate chips, nuts or dried fruits to their ricotta cookies, while others prefer to keep them plain and simple.
Whatever the reason, ricotta cookies are clearly a favorite in the Big Apple.
The Italian influence also reigned in many other states, as “Italian Christmas Cookies” came out on top in states such as Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island, places where there is a sizeable population of Italian Americans; but also in some surprising locations such as Tennessee, Virginia, California and Florida.
Missouri’s Grinch Christmas Cookie, which is green, is probably the most unusual of the contenders.
