“Airs of Freedom” is the first major solo show presented at the Instituto Italiano di Cultura di New York of renowned Italian Colombian artist Rosana Auqué. Every singer is first and foremost a voice, with its unique timbre, tonal qualities, and colors. Even great performers seek instruments that can give voice to their interpretation of musical texts. Composers such as Bach, Paganini, and Clementi played a crucial role in innovating the characteristics of musical instruments of their time, precisely because they were in search of sounds that emerged in their imagination but did not yet exist in reality. Casa Italiana hosts this book club online on the Zoom platform to discuss contemporary Italian books in Italian. The Club is open to anyone and its purpose is to offer the possibility to practice the Italian language. Everybody is encouraged to speak. The group suggests the books, usually by contemporary Italian authors, that reflect the changes that have taken place with time in the language and customs. The discussion is informal.

Pandemie, competizione mortale con superpotenze rivali, massiccia immigrazione e divisioni interne: queste sfide definirono l’Impero Romano nel terzo secolo, proprio come caratterizzano anche oggi l’Occidente moderno. Tuttavia, mentre Roma in Occidente alla fine “cadde” nel 476 d.C., in Oriente resistette per secoli, dimostrando che il declino può essere gestito e persino invertito quando le istituzioni rimangono resilienti e le società abbracciano il cambiamento. I sorprendenti parallelismi tra il declino (e la parziale caduta) dell’Impero Romano e le sfide affrontate dall’Occidente moderno ci ricordano che l’umanità spesso dimentica le lezioni del passato.
