After having just recovered from Covid, Stephen Colbert is off the air again, this time with a ruptured appendix, a potentially life-threatening condition. The popular host of “The Late Show” on CBS announced it in a social media post explaining that he underwent surgery and had to cancel this week’s episodes.
“I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix,” Colbert wrote. A burst appendix requires an immediate intervention to remove the organ from spreading infection through the peritoneum, the membrane forming the lining of the abdominal cavity.
Comedian, writer, political commentator, Stephen Colbert took the helm at the “Late Show” in 2015 after David Letterman’s long tenure. He was supposed to interview actress Jennifer Garner, director Baz Luhrmann and guitarist John Scofield on Tuesday; actor Patrick Stewart and singer-songwriter Jon Batiste on Wednesday; and singer Barbra Streisand and actor Kelsey Grammer on Thursday.
His fans miss him a lot. His show, along with many other late-night shows, was already off the air from May to October during the Writers Guild of America strike. A Covid bout obliged Colbert to cancel more episodes in October.
The “Late Show” airs Monday through Friday at 11:35 pm EST on CBS, and streams on Paramount+.
