In New Haven, CT, coinciding with JMW Turner’s 250th birthday, The Yale Center for British Art has mounted a phenomenal show of Turner which is of a scope and depth we’re unlikely to see again anytime soon– if ever–especially outside of the UK. This is well worth a day trip to New Haven for anyone who appreciates this unique painter, said by many historians to be a key precursor to modern painting–especially Impressionism and Expressionism. This is as important an exhibit as any currently showing in New York City. Lines would be around the block were it held there. There is no entrance fee to view the show or the rest of the galleries. Also on view is the first major presentation in North America of work by the contemporary British painter Tracy Emin, titled “I Loved You Until The Morning”.
Curated by the energetic Lucinda Lax, this exhibit is the result of an encyclopedic knowledge and sensitive appreciation of Turner combined with the resources of the largest collection of Turner in North America. She planned and prepared for an entire year preceding the opening on March 29th. The title “Romance and Reality” refers to the intense contrast between the painter confronting the monumentality of landscapes with the quotidian presence of humankind. Turner’s romantic approach is edged with his recognition of opposing forces
“J.M.W. Turner. Romance and Reality” shows 6 days a week (Monday closed) until July 27th
