A one-of-a-kind convoy is crossing Ukraine not to transport goods or troops, but rather emotions and stories. It’s called Courage of a Nation, the world’s first “gallery train,” born from a collaboration between Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) and the foundation of American billionaire and philanthropist Howard Buffett, son of Warren Buffett, one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential men.
Set up inside three train carriages, the exhibition showcases photographs taken by Buffett himself during 19 trips between April 2022 and February 2025. The images portray not only the horrors of war but also the hope, courage, and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
The exhibition was curated by Muhammed Muheisen, a National Geographic photographer and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, who shaped the narrative arc of the photographs.
The train, which began its journey in early June, has already departed from cities like Odessa, recently targeted by airstrikes, and is scheduled to stop in 63 locations over the next four months. For security reasons, the full itinerary is not public, but advance registration is available for those wishing to attend at each stop.
The project is part of a broader commitment by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, which has already provided approximately $800 million in aid to Ukraine since 2022. Its support includes demining programs and agricultural development, with the goal of exceeding $1 billion by 2025.
Previously, the organization partnered with Ukrzaliznytsia to launch a “food train” capable of preparing one million meals in conflict-affected regions.
Howard Buffett also emphasized that U.S. political dynamics, including the lack of a peace agreement promoted by figures like Donald Trump, will not affect his foundation’s ongoing efforts in Ukraine.
