From Military Base to Cradle of Future Cinema. This is the destiny of Fort Monmouth, a former U.S. Army installation spanning approximately 292 acres, which will soon become home to the new Netflix Studios; an impressive $1 billion project set to redefine the entertainment landscape in the United States.
The California-based giant aims high: its goal is to create a facility on a par with established names like Borden Studios in Long Island City and Robert DeNiro’s Wildflower Studios in Astoria, the first vertical film studio in the world. In this new creative hub, the streaming platform envisions an ecosystem where directors, technicians, and creatives can find inspiration, work, and innovation.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy highlighted how this investment marks a return to the roots for a state that was among the pioneers of the American film industry. He stated that Netflix’s arrival not only strengthens the state’s reputation as a center of excellence in audiovisual production but also attracts some of the brightest minds in the industry worldwide.
First Lady Tammy Murphy also emphasized Netflix’s impact on pop culture and the economy, noting how the company has radically transformed the way stories are told. She added that, besides seeing glimpses of New Jersey on screens worldwide, residents will benefit from new job opportunities and strategic investments.
So far, the multinational has contributed $125 billion to the U.S. economy and created jobs for over 140,000 people, including cast and crew. Local officials assure that similar numbers could soon benefit the Garden State as well.
The undertaking is ambitious but not immediate; work will begin only after an approval process still underway, with the Netflix Studios’ opening planned for 2028. Meanwhile, demolition of the old military structures is expected to take about 13 months.
