Actor Andre Braugher, who won two Emmys and starred in the television comedies “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and the police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street” in the 1990s, passed away on Monday following a brief illness, his publicist announced on Tuesday. He was 61.
Braugher played Captain Ray Holt in the police satire “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” for eight seasons, from 2013 to 2021, costarring with Andy Samberg. For this character, he was nominated for four Emmys and won two Critics Choice Awards for best supporting actor in a comedy series.
His breakthrough performance on “Homicide” from 1992 to 1998, as Detective Frank Pembleton, helped him establish himself as a serious actor. For this role, he was honored with his first Emmy in 1998 for lead actor in a drama series.
In 2006, Braugher was honored with an Emmy for his performance as Nick Atwater in the miniseries “Thief.”
Furthermore, Braugher performed often at the New York Shakespeare Festival. In 1997, he received an off-Broadway Obie Award for his performance as “Henry V.” He also performed in the plays As You Like It, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night.
He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson; sons Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley; brother Charles Jennings; and his mother, Sally Braugher.
