The 25th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor has been awarded to comedian, actor, writer, and businessman Kevin Hart. Recipients of what is regarded as the top accolade in the humor industry include Tina Fey, Bob Newhart, David Letterman, and Jon Stewart.
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is given to people who, like its namesake, the satirist and social critic Samuel Clemens, had a significant influence on American culture. Richard Pryor was the inaugural laureate in 1998.
“For over three decades, Kevin Hart has been a source of laughter across America and throughout the world with his iconic characters, inimitable physical comedy, and relatable narratives,” says Kennedy Center President, Deborah F. Rutter.
“I’ve been doing comedy since the inception of this award 25 years ago. To be honored in this commemorative year feels surreal,” stated Hart. “Comedy is my outlet for social commentary and observations on life… I can’t wait to celebrate!”
Hart got his start performing jokes at a modest comedy club in his hometown of Philadelphia on amateur night. His standup routines now pack stadiums, entertaining crowds with tales of romance, marital discord, his daughter’s first swear word, attempting to seem strong at five feet five inches, his dread of rollercoasters, and his drug-addled father who spent a lot of time in and out of jail. Hart’s frequently witty commentary appears to find no contact or event too trivial. Specials have been made out of the performances.
