Áine O’Healy is Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and in her last book Migrant Anxieties: Italian Cinema in a Transnational Frame, she deals with one of the most urgent concerns in contemporary global society, that of migration, and with one of the major threats of Western society, namely anxiety.
Her interest lies in Italian films produced from 1990 to 2016 and in the symptomaticity of cinema representation. In this conversation with Valentina Frasisti, Ph.D. student of Italian Literature and Culture, she shares the reasons for her interest in this topic, and underlines the need to critically look at what remains out of the frame in migrants’ representation, and what effects this lack of visibility produces in the audience.
