Following Ford Motor Co.’s update to their electric vehicle’s adapter and software this year, the new model’s battery is now compatible with the same charging port used for Teslas and can be powered up at the same stations.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E is designed with more power, a longer range, and quicker charging, along with the brand-new adapter. The company sent owners this more advanced adapter through mail.
“Our gift to you,” the card inside reads: “Thousands more fast chargers.”
This updated adapter has been long awaited by owners of the Mustang Mach-E, who can now access Tesla’s network of DC fast chargers, which offer the largest and most user-friendly way to refill your battery as quickly as possible for long drives or road trips.
Tesla’s DC chargers, also known as a supercharger by some EV specialists, account for more than half of all public DC fast chargers in the United States. They’re known to be more common than DCFC’s from independent charging companies like EVgo and Electrify America, along with many arguing they are more reliable and easier to use.
In addition to the adapter, the 2024 model of Ford’s Mach-E received a variety of changes due to numerous software and hardware upgrades.
Buyers of the car wanted better acceleration and faster charging, according to Mach-E chief engineer Donna Dickinson. Ford says they were able to achieve this and reduce costs, in part by adapting the rear motor it uses in the F-150 Lightning Electric pickup. It also changed electronic components of the front motor, as all wheel-drive electric vehicles have at least two separate motors, one on each axle; some have three or four.
Although for many owners of electric vehicles and people that may be in the market for one, the primary benefit of this new model is its ability to match with Tesla DC charging stations. The updated adapter addresses one of the main reasons people have been hesitant to purchase an EV, which is usually concern over the accessibility and dependability of fast-charging for longer trips in the car.
